HIGH GEOLOGICAL ROUTE
In this tour you will discover
There are places where the mountain is pure art and walking is an exercise of vital inspiration. Nothing is there by chance. Colors, textures, lines, shapes, what is seen and what is not seen, what is today and what was yesterday... Everything responds to a dynamic and changing order. Let's walk through the heart of the Pyrenees. Let's read mountains by the hand of Asier Hilario and Alberto Iñurrategi.
Few places on Earth allow us to understand the architecture, shape and dynamics of the mountains as the massif of Monte Perdido. The cirque of Gavarnie, the glacial valleys of Ordesa and Pineta, the ibon of Marboré or the glacier of the imposing Vignemale are just some of the great natural monuments of this exceptional geological tour through the heart of the Pyrenees. Are you coming on a geological route on this author's journey?
Asier Hilario: Ph.D. in Geology
His admiration for the Pyrenees led him to do his doctoral thesis in the mountains of Benasque.
For the last 15 years he has been dedicated to the interpretation and communication of earth sciences, guiding groups and offering conferences and courses around the world.
He is known for his work in the Flysch of the UNESCO World Geopark of the Basque Coast, but his true inspiration has always been in the mountains of the Pyrenees. He defends the intellectual approach to the mountains as a vital exercise of freedom and humility to look beyond the landscape and be surprised by the passage of time.
Alberto Iñurrategi
"We will live an exciting mountain adventure traveling through some of the most spectacular places in the Pyrenees. Are you coming to conquer the high route of the Perdidos with me?"
An icon of Basque mountaineering and a reference in the panorama of the great mountains, he has become the youngest mountaineer to win the 14 eight-thousanders.
He has also been able to transmit the value of mountaineering through carefully crafted documentaries, books and slideshows that reveal his deep respect for this activity. "Over the years and in the mountains, my concept of home has moved from the space that is home to my family to the places I travel, driven by a passion that does not fade.
If, first, I looked for my place in the Himalayan mountains, now I have found it in the Pyrenees: don't their summits have the drawing of a house: the summit represents a roof, a roof: it is not possible to go out of its margins. The entrance door, at the end of a valley, allows us to take our first steps. And everything in between comforts us, teaches us to overcome difficulties, to understand each other and to belong to something, it unites us to the roots we all need".

THE ROUTE
DAY 1
Place of origin: Bujaruelo Refuge
Arrival at the Bujaruelo Refuge, where we will welcome you, introduce ourselves and have an explanatory talk. At this meeting point we will give you the welcome pack, we will see the details of the route, the conditions of the mountain, and we will teach you how to use the security geolocator device that you will have at your disposal during the whole itinerary. Here you will be able to solve your last minute doubts. And from here begins the fantastic adventure that will take us through some of the most spectacular landscapes of the Pyrenees. All this enlivened with a welcome snack.
DAY 2 / STAGE 1
La Brecha and the Ordesa Canyon
-
15.9 Km
-
+1626m/-761m
From the Refugio de Bujaruelo to the Refugio de Góriz.
From Bujaruelo we cross the Roman bridge and ascend following the red and white marks that indicate the passage of the GR 11 to the Puerto de Bujaruelo. Here we follow the sign that leads us to the Brecha de Rolando Refuge. From the same Gap we will continue first a little to the right by some blocks to begin the descent along a path marked by milestones that will take us to the Narciso Flats. From here we turn to our left (NE direction) and reach the pass of Millares to continue along the plains of the same name without difficulty to the ref. of Góriz.
DAY 3 / STAGE 2
Collado de Añisclo and Pineta Valley
-
12.6 Km
-
+625m/-1583m
From the Góriz Refuge to the Pineta Refuge.
We leave Góriz following the GR 11 marks that go up little by little to the Collado Superior de Góriz. At this point we leave the GR 11 that descends to the Añisclo Canyon and take the milestones in a northeasterly direction that lead us through the Faja de las Olas to the Collado de Añisclo, where we also find an area of chains that help us in our progression. To avoid this technical step we can descend to the Fuen Blanca, and then ascend to the Collado de Añisclo. We carefully descend the long and demanding descent from the Collado de Añisclo to the Pineta Refuge.
DAY 4 / STAGE 3
The Monte Perdido Glacier
-
17.2 Km
-
+1767m/-948m
From Pineta Refuge to Espuguettes Refuge.
From Pineta we follow the National Park signs to the Balcón de Pineta and Lago de Marboré. We continue bordering the lake on the right towards the Brecha and Refugio de Tucarroya. We climb to the gap and from here we descend a steeply sloping channel with many loose rocks that requires us to go down with caution. In case of snow, the difficulty increases and it is essential to use ice axes and crampons. There is also an alternative variant through the Puerto Nuevo de Pineta that avoids this technical step. Once we descend from the Brecha de Tucarroya we head towards the Horquette d'Alans by an uphill path. Descent to the Espuguettes Refuge where we will enjoy unbeatable views.
DAY 5 / STAGE 4
The Cirque de Gavarnie
-
11.7 Km
-
+385m/-877m
From the Espuguettes Hut to the Grange de Holle Hut.
Departure from the Espuguettes Refuge towards Gavarnie. After a steep descent we will find a sign indicating the path to the Cirque de Gavarnie to the left. We walk along this beautiful forest path that will leave us at the base of the imposing Cirque de Gavarnie. From the Hotellerie du Cirque to Gavarnie is a walk of about an hour. From the village of Gavarnie to the Grange de Holle refuge there is a path that is not easy to find. Follow the signs to the cemetery and after the cemetery take an unmarked path to the right that will lead you to the Grange de Holle refuge.
DAY 6 / STAGE 5
The Great Vignemale
